Clutches

Over the past few years, there has been a significant improvement in materials technology on vehicle clutches, due possibly to the removal of asbestos as a major component of friction materials. With the use of carbon fibre, ceramics and semi-metallics, the range of clutches and their target uses has increased many fold.

PhoenixMotorsport has scoured the globe to offer you, what we consider to be the best range of performance clutches currently available. With units available, sometimes in 7 stages, there is a clutch for everyone, from the stock street car to the full blown drag and drift racing cars.

With uprated pressure plates, solid and sprung centerplates, full circle and paddle clutches, and a choice of friction materials, there is sure to be the perfect clutch for your application.

The following are general descriptions of the various clutch stages and their recommended uses.

Stage 1 ClutchSTAGE 1

Application:

Bolt-on replacement on stock or mildly modified engines

Characteristics:

Stock like driveability and very good wear. High clamp pressure plate, steel backed and multi-compound woven organic material and high torque sprung hub and disc assembly, bearing and tool kit.

Types of use:

Street, fast street with the occasional track day.

Stage 2 ClutchSTAGE 2

Application:

Bolt-on replacement on mild and moderately modified engines.

Characteristics:

Stock like driveability and excellent wear characteristics. High clamp pressure plate, pure Kevlar friction material and high torque sprung hub and disc assembly, bearing and tool kit.

Types of use:

Street, fast street and drag racing with the occasional track day.

Stage 2 Plus ClutchSTAGE 2 Plus

Application:

Modified engines making more torque than a stage 2 can support.

Characteristics:

Good daily driveability and very good wear characteristics. High clamp pressure plate, composite multi-friction carbon-kevlar material and extra high torque sprung hub and disc assembly, bearing and tool kit.

Types of use:

Street, fast street, road race and rally.

Stage 3 ClutchSTAGE 3

Application:

Heavily modified street and race engines.

Characteristics:

Offers sufficient daily driveability and comfortable pedal feel with a quick engagement. High clamp pressure plate, 4 or 6 puck carbon semi-metallic friction plate and high torque sprung hub and disc assembly, bearing and tool kit. Offers good wear characteristics under low and high stress usage.

Types of use:

Street, drag, drift, race and rally.

Stage 3 Plus ClutchSTAGE 3 Plus

Application:

Heavily modified street and race engines making more torque than the stage 3 can support.

Characteristics:

Offers good daily driveability and better manageability than the stage 3. High clamp pressure plate, full circle carbon metallic friction plate and extra high torque sprung hub and disc assembly, bearing and tool kit.
Offers better wear characteristics than the stage 3 under low and high stress usage.

Types of use:

Street, drag, drift and road race.

Stage 4 ClutchSTAGE 4

Application:

Heavily modified race engines where an instantaneous engagement and light weight are beneficial.

Characteristics:

High clamp pressure plate,3, 4 or 6 puck carbon semi-metallic friction plate and high torque rigid hub and carrier assembly, bearing and tool kit. Offers good wear characteristics under low and high stress usage. Not street friendly due to harsh engagement.

Types of use:

Drag, drift, race and rally and pulling.

Stage 5 ClutchSTAGE 5

Application:

Extremely modified race engines or applications that call for a “slipper” clutch/progressive torque-induced engagement. Ordered as custom configured only. Not street useable due to harsh engagement.

Characteristics:

High clamp pressure plate, (adjustable on some applications), rigid iron disc assembly, bearing and tool kit.

Types of use:

Drag, pulling.
